Summary

The Ghanaian Society of Cardiology (GSC), the Stroke Association Support Network – Ghana (SASNET), and the World Heart Federation (WHF) are delighted to invite you to participate in a Roundtable discussion focusing on Hypertension.

Hypertension is a growing and major problem in Sub-Saharan Africa, with an estimated 25% of the population affected. In Ghana, cardiovascular disease is one of the main causes of death, with hypertension being the primary risk factor. Approximately 34% of the Ghanaian population has high blood pressure and experiences significant barriers in accessing prevention and treatment measures. Implementation of medical guidelines is often challenging in LMICs and requires strong local advocacy efforts supported by internationally respected organizations.

The Roundtable in Accra, Ghana brings together policymakers, representatives of the Ministry of Health, professional health workers, patients, academia, and the private sector, among others, to identify actionable solutions to existing roadblocks preventing the successful management of hypertension. The Roundtable will potentially lead to the development of a national action plan on hypertension, which might include the adoption of standard protocols for hypertension treatment, the addition of fixed-dose combination for hypertension in the Essential Medicines List, integration of team-based care and task-sharing, as well as multi-months refills for hypertension medications. The recently updated WHF Roadmap for Hypertension and the WHO Guidelines on Hypertension will be key documents supporting the discussion.
